Turkish lira sign (₺)

The Turkish lira sign (₺) stands for the Turkish lira. The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye introduced it in March 2012. In the bank’s words, its anchor shape and two upward lines stand for confidence and a steadily rising value.

How to read it

Unicode encodes it as TURKISH LIRA SIGN (U+20BA), the official lira currency sign for Turkey. The central bank chose the design for two qualities, “confidence” and “steadily rising value”. In its words, the anchor-like sign says that the Turkish lira has become a “safe haven”, and the upward-pointing parallel lines stand for the steadily rising value of the lira and the Turkish economy. Before the sign, the currency was usually written TL, and Unicode notes that the abbreviation is still in use. The ISO code is TRY.
