Unicode encodes it as PESO SIGN (U+20B1), with Filipino peso sign as its other name, for the Philippines. Its chart and chapter note that current and discontinued Latin American peso currencies, among them the Mexican, Chilean, Colombian and Dominican pesos, use the dollar sign, while the Philippine peso uses this separate symbol. The ISO 4217 name is Philippine Peso, code PHP; the Mexican peso is MXN (currency codes).

Look-alikes

The ruble sign ₽ is also a crossed P, with one line below the bowl rather than two through it. The peseta sign ₧ (U+20A7), for Spain, is the one Unicode links to the peso sign. The two are easy to mix up: the US Government Publishing Office’s style manual lists ₧ as the symbol for the peso.
