A green heart

Green heart đź’š

A green heart. Besides affection, people use it for things that are green: nature and environmental causes, Ireland and St Patrick’s Day, and teams and fan groups whose colour is green.

How to read it

💚 is U+1F49A GREEN HEART, approved in Unicode 6.0 in 2010 and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015, according to Emojipedia. Dictionary.com’s entry says it is used for love, support, close bonds and admiration for things related to green, from nature and plants to school and team colours, and also for supporting the environment and for Ireland and Irish culture. Emojipedia’s David Doochin gives the same pair, environmental movements and St Patrick’s Day, and adds Charli XCX’s “Brat”. Unicode’s keywords for it are emotion, green, heart, ily, love and romantic. Older Android phones drew something quite different: Emojipedia notes an orange and pink heart with beads of sweat.

Fans and flags

Emojipedia records 💚 as frequently used on X (formerly Twitter) for the Korean boy band NCT, much as the purple heart is used for BTS. One of Dictionary.com’s examples is a Celtic football fan. Unicode’s proposals for the newest hearts note that people build flags out of hearts where no flag emoji exists, and give ❤🖤💚 for the Pan-African flag.
