Locomotive (steam train) 🚂

A steam locomotive. It means a train or rail travel. Emojipedia says it is also used for getting on board with an idea, or the “hype train”.

How to read it

🚂 is U+1F682, named STEAM LOCOMOTIVE in the Unicode Standard and locomotive in Unicode’s emoji lists. Unicode’s proposals chart traces it to “Towards an encoding of symbol characters used as emoji” (L2/09-114), a document from the Irish and German national bodies. The character was approved in Unicode 6.0 in 2010, but Unicode’s emoji data labels it E1.0, because the label records when a character was first defined in Unicode’s emoji data files, which for 🚂 was Emoji 1.0 in 2015. Emojipedia describes it as a steam train, powered by coal or wood, and says it may also be used to show support for a cause or trend, encouraging others to “get on board” with an idea, or to say someone is joining the “hype train”. Unicode’s keywords are caboose, engine, locomotive, railway, steam, train, trains and travel.
