It arrived with the brown heart in Unicode 12.0, released on 5 March 2019, and in Emoji 12.0; Unicode’s emoji tables trace both to the same 2018 proposal on emoji colours (L2/18-141). Dictionary.com notes that most platforms draw it whitish grey, several with an outline, so that it stays visible on screen. Emojipedia also records it in memorials and tributes to someone who has died, and, since white is the colour of bridal dresses, beside wedding emoji; Dictionary.com’s 2020 entry mentions neither use.
