what does this symbol mean?
The front of an oven: a strip with two knobs across the top and a window in the door

Oven safe

The maker says the item can go in an oven, often up to a stated temperature. Makers draw their own oven icon; it isn’t a standard symbol.

How to read it

Mepal’s guide has an oven icon for products suitable for the oven, a separate icon for the steam oven up to 100 °C (212 °F), and a thermometer icon that gives the highest temperature a product can withstand in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. Whirlpool describes a related mark with two temperatures, the highest and the lowest a piece can withstand, which covers both baking in the oven and storing in the freezer. Tefal’s cookware instructions say its pans are for the hob only unless they state otherwise.

These describe what each mark means and who defines it. Most are makers’ own icons rather than a standard, and the same mark can mean slightly different things on different brands. What a particular dish, pan or container can be used for is set by its maker, in its care and use instructions.

The rating depends on the parts

In the oven the heat reaches the whole pot, so Zwilling says the handles and the lid have to stand it as well as the base. It rates its cookware with plastic handles as ovenproof up to 150 °C (302 °F), and its Simplify range with silicone handles up to 180 °C (356 °F), with the glass lid up to 150 °C. Tefal rates cookware whose handles are stainless steel, without Bakelite or silicone, to 250 °C (482 °F).
