How to read it

Apple’s iPhone User Guide says a green indicator appears whenever an app uses the camera, including when the camera and microphone are used together; the orange dot is for the microphone without the camera. Apple lists it among the privacy indicators as “Camera in use”, and says a message at the top of Control Center tells the owner when an app has recently used the camera or microphone. 9to5Mac’s 2020 explainer says that message names the app and the kind of access. The dot sits in the status bar above the signal icon on iPhones with a notch, and in the centre of the Dynamic Island on models that have one (9to5Mac, 2022). Why it is green

9to5Mac notes that the colour matches the green LED beside the camera on MacBooks and iMacs, a physical light that comes on with the camera. The iPhone has no camera LED, so iOS draws a dot on the display instead.

Look-alikes

The Orange dot on iPhone means the microphone alone. A green bubble behind the time is a call: Apple’s 2019 status icon page gave green for a call, red for recording sound or the screen, and blue for a Personal Hotspot, Screen Mirroring or an app using location. On a Mac, Apple’s Mac User Guide says a green dot next to the Control Center icon in the menu bar means a camera is in use. The Mac shows one dot at a time, so a green dot there also covers the microphone.

iPhone green and Android green

The two systems use green differently. On an iPhone, green means the camera, with or without the microphone. Android Help says a green indicator shows at the top right of an Android screen when apps use the camera or the microphone, so on Android it can mean the microphone alone. The Android Open Source Project’s documentation says the indicator shows an icon first, then a dot that stays until the app is dismissed or closed. The Android status icons page has the rest.
