what does this symbol mean?
IEC 60062 A resistor with one wide white band around the middle of its body, above the figure 9

White band on a resistor

On a resistor, a white band is the digit 9, or as the multiplier band ×1,000,000,000. White has no tolerance value.

How to read it

In the IEC 60062 color code white is 9 as a digit band and ×1,000,000,000 (10⁹, “x 1G” in TT Electronics’ table) as the multiplier. Vishay, TT Electronics and Panasonic give it no tolerance and Panasonic no temperature coefficient. As a digit it is the 9 in the University of Texas at Dallas lab manual’s example: white, purple, yellow is 9, 7 and four zeros, 970 kΩ.

This explains what a resistor’s markings mean. Marking schemes vary between makers and series, and the part’s own datasheet takes precedence. It is not a guide to building or repairing electronics.

Where the charts disagree

The University of Central Florida’s lab manual table gives white no multiplier, where Vishay, TT Electronics and Panasonic give ×10⁹.
