About south American flags

The national flags of South America, each drawn in the proportions and colours its own law sets, with what its colours, sun and stars stand for in that country’s law, and who gives the meaning where the law gives none.

Flags that look alike

Yellow, blue and red, with yellow on top and taking half the flag, is Colombia’s flag when plain and Ecuador’s when it carries the national arms; Venezuela’s three stripes are equal, with an arc of eight white stars in the blue.

Chile’s flag has the three colours and single white star of the Texas flag, but its blue is a square in the upper half only, with the red running the whole length beneath it.

Argentina’s Sun of May is on every flag since 1985; until then private citizens flew the light blue and white without it.
