How to read it
Lieutenant colonel sits above Major (O-4), whose oak leaf is gold, and below Colonel (O-6), who wears a silver eagle. It is the middle field grade rank. The abbreviation is Lt Col, and the Navy’s equivalent grade is commander.

Black on the OCP uniform
On the OCP camouflage uniform, Air Force rank insignia are spice brown, except lieutenant colonel’s and first lieutenant’s, which are black (DAFI 36-2903). A black leaf is a lieutenant colonel; a brown one is a major.
