How to read it
First lieutenant sits above second lieutenant, whose single bar is gold, and below Captain (O-3), who wears two silver bars. It is the middle company grade rank. The abbreviation is 1st Lt, and the Navy’s equivalent grade is lieutenant (junior grade).

Black on the OCP uniform
On the OCP camouflage uniform, Air Force rank insignia are spice brown, except first lieutenant’s and lieutenant colonel’s, which are black (DAFI 36-2903).
