VVS1 and VVS2 are the third and fourth of the 11 grades on the GIA clarity scale, below FL and IF. GIA explains where the letters come from: the terms were once very very slightly imperfect, very slightly imperfect, slightly imperfect and imperfect, later shortened to VVS, VS, SI and I.
