Edge weld
The symbol for a weld on an edge joint, where the edges of two or more parallel or nearly parallel members meet.
How to read it
An edge joint is a joint between the edges of two or more parallel or nearly parallel members.
This explains what a symbol specifies on a drawing. It isn't welding instruction, and a drawing's own notes and the governing code take precedence.
Older symbols
Older drawings mark welds on flanged edges with their own symbols. The Army's 1967 welding manual, TM 9-237, gives edge-flange and corner-flange weld symbols for light gage metal joints whose edges are flared or flanged. India's IS 813:1986 has a symbol for a butt weld between plates with raised edges, the raised edges melted down completely.
