Rainforest Alliance Certified

How to read it

The Rainforest Alliance says its frog seal means the farms and companies behind a product support healthy forests, better livelihoods for farmers, human rights, good environmental practices and climate resilience. Independent auditors check farms and companies against the standard, and only certified ones may display the seal. It appears on coffee, tea, chocolate, fruit, juices, flowers, paper, furniture and more, and may apply to a named ingredient rather than the whole product.

Why a frog

The organization’s founders chose the red-eyed tree frog in the late 1980s because it is common in Costa Rica, where the Rainforest Alliance began. Frogs are bio-indicators: where frog populations are healthy, so are ecosystems.

Two seals

A newer seal marks Regenerative Agriculture Certification, which adds requirements for soil health, biodiversity and climate resilience to those of the Sustainable Agriculture Certification.
