How to read it

The symbol is a headlamp with lines of light slanting downwards, crossed by a wavy line. UN Regulation No. 121 sets the front fog lamp tell-tale as green, and Volkswagen’s guide lists it among its green lights. Ford’s F-150 manual says it lights when the front fog lamps are switched on; Honda’s Civic and Nissan’s LEAF manuals say the same of theirs.

Dashboard symbols vary by manufacturer. The vehicle's owner's manual or a qualified mechanic can say what a light means for a particular vehicle.

When it comes on

Front fog lights only work with other lights on. Ford’s F-150 allows them with the light switch at parking lamps or headlamps, or at autolamps once the headlamps are on. Toyota’s 2024 RAV4 allows them when the headlights are on in low beam. Canada’s regulations require the parking, tail, license plate and side marker lamps to be lit while the front fog lamps are on.

What the manual says to do

Ford’s manual says to switch the front fog lamps on only during reduced visibility, and Toyota’s says they give better visibility in rain and fog. In the UK, the Highway Code says drivers must not use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced, and must switch them off when it improves, to avoid dazzling other road users. Other countries set their own rules.

Look-alikes

The rear fog light indicator has the same wavy line, but its lamp faces the other way, its lines are straight, and UN Regulation No. 121 makes it yellow. The low beam indicator has no wavy line.
