How to read it

The symbol is a lamp facing the opposite way from the headlamp symbols, with straight lines of light to its right crossed by a wavy line. UN Regulation No. 121 sets the rear fog lamp tell-tale as yellow, where the front fog lamp’s is green. Mazda’s Mazda3 manual says the rear fog light indicator lights while the rear fog light is on, and Nissan’s 2024 Qashqai manual says the same.

Dashboard symbols vary by manufacturer. The vehicle's owner's manual or a qualified mechanic can say what a light means for a particular vehicle.

When it can be used

Mazda’s Mazda3 needs the headlights on before the rear fog light will come on, and keeps it on if the headlights are turned off while the position lights stay on. Canada’s regulations require the parking, tail, license plate and side marker lamps to be lit while the rear fog lamps are on.

What the manual says to do

Nissan’s 2024 Qashqai manual says the rear fog light should only be used when visibility is seriously reduced, generally to less than 100 m (328 ft). The UK Highway Code gives the same distance for using headlights, allows front or rear fog lights then, and says they must be switched off when visibility improves.

Look-alikes

The front fog light indicator has the lamp on the right with slanting lines, and UN Regulation No. 121 makes it green.
