what does this symbol mean?
A solid black five-pointed star

Star symbol

A single solid black star at the bottom of a Pokémon card marks it as a rare card. Since 2023, other star symbols mark the rarities above it.

Easily confused with

How to read it

The star is the highest of the three basic rarity symbols, above the circle (common) and the diamond (uncommon). CGC, the card grading company, places it in the bottom right or bottom left corner, beside the set number. The Pokémon Company International kept the solid black star unchanged when it revamped the rarity symbols for the Scarlet & Violet Series in 2023.

This page says what a marking on a Pokémon card means, from The Pokémon Company International’s rulebooks and announcements and published guides. Pokémon and its card markings belong to Nintendo, Creatures Inc., GAME FREAK inc. and The Pokémon Company; the drawings are simplified sketches, not the cards’ own artwork. It doesn’t authenticate, grade or value any card.

One star, and the stars above it

For years one black star covered every kind of rare card. Wargamer writes that after two decades of new cards it was hiding a huge variety of rarities, and that The Pokémon Company added five new symbols with the Scarlet & Violet sets of 2023: two black or two silver stars and one, two or three gold stars. CGC notes that rare Pokémon cards come in several variations.

Look-alikes

A black star with the word PROMO across it is a promo card, given away or sold in boxed products rather than found in booster packs. The plain star marks a rare card from a set.
