Honda Safety Support indicator

Honda’s single indicator for several Honda Sensing systems, among them the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) and Road Departure Mitigation: green when they are on, gray when they are off, amber for a problem.

How to read it

On the 2024 Civic, Honda’s manual gives one Safety Support indicator for the Road Departure Mitigation system, CMBS, Low Speed Braking Control and the blind spot information system, the last two on models that have them. It lights up in green when all of them are on, in gray when all are off, and in green and gray when some are off. An amber Safety Support indicator comes on if there is a problem with any of them.

Honda lights vary by model and year. The owner’s manual for the vehicle says what each light means on it, and a Honda dealer or a qualified mechanic can say what it means for a particular car.

When the amber light comes on

The manual gives other reasons for the amber light as well. It comes on when Road Departure Mitigation or CMBS shuts itself off, and stays on while the temperature inside the camera is too high or the area around the camera is blocked by dirt or mud.

What the systems do

CMBS is designed to alert the driver when it determines that a collision is possible, and to help reduce speed, avoid collisions and reduce their severity. Road Departure Mitigation alerts and helps when the car may cross detected lane markings, run onto the grass or gravel at the edge of the pavement, or approach a detected oncoming vehicle.

What NHTSA calls them

NHTSA calls a system like CMBS automatic emergency braking, which applies the brakes automatically when a forward collision is imminent. It describes lane departure warning, which alerts the driver as the vehicle approaches or crosses lane markers, and blind spot warning as separate technologies. NHTSA notes that makers use different names for the same driver assistance technologies.

What the manual says to do

For an amber indicator that stays on, Honda’s manual says: “Stays on constantly - Have your vehicle checked by a dealer.”
