How to read it

Honda’s 2024 Civic manual says LKAS provides steering input to help keep the car in the middle of a detected lane, and gives tactile and visual alerts if the car is detected drifting out of it. The LKAS indicator lights up in white when the LKAS button is pressed and in green when LKAS is in operation. An amber LKAS indicator comes on if there is a problem with the system.

Honda lights vary by model and year. The owner’s manual for the vehicle says what each light means on it, and a Honda dealer or a qualified mechanic can say what it means for a particular car.

What the manual says to do

For an amber indicator that stays on, Honda’s manual says: “Stays on constantly - Have your vehicle checked by a dealer.”

What NHTSA calls it

Keeping the car in the middle of its lane is what NHTSA calls lane centering assistance, continual steering to keep the vehicle centered; steering only to stop the car leaving its lane it calls lane keeping assistance. NHTSA notes that makers use different names for the same driver assistance technologies.

Look-alikes

A problem with Honda’s Road Departure Mitigation system lights the Safety Support indicator instead. Toyota calls its lane light the LTA indicator, Ford the lane keeping system indicator and Hyundai the Lane Safety indicator light.
