How to read it

Nissan’s 2024 Rogue manual says Steering Assist helps keep the car near the center of the lane when both right and left lane markers are detected, and works only with Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC). Its indicator is gray when Steering Assist is in standby and green when it is active. The status indicator in the vehicle information display adds orange for a Steering Assist malfunction and red when hands off the wheel are detected; with no indicator shown, Steering Assist is off.

Nissan lights vary by model and year. The owner’s manual for the vehicle says what each light means on it, and a Nissan dealer or a qualified mechanic can say what it means for a particular car.

The Hands OFF warning light

The manual lists a separate Hands OFF warning light. When Steering Assist is on and the wheel isn’t operated, or the driver takes their hands off it for a time, the light comes on. If the driver still doesn’t respond, the manual says the car turns on its hazard lights and slows to a complete stop.

What NHTSA calls it

NHTSA calls this kind of system lane centering assistance: it provides continual steering to keep the vehicle centered in its lane. NHTSA notes that makers use different names for the same driver assistance technologies.

Look-alikes

Hyundai’s Lane Following Assist indicator light is Hyundai’s light for the same kind of system. The ProPILOT Assist status indicator shows the state of the whole system.
