Ford lane keeping system indicator

Ford’s indicator for its lane keeping system: white or green when the system is on and sees the lane markings, gray when it doesn’t, and struck through when the system is off.

How to read it

Ford’s 2024 Escape manual gives two sets of colours. With the 8-inch cluster display, a white indicator and white lane markings show when the system is on and detects the lane markings; above about 40 mph (65 km/h) without lane markings, the indicator and markings are gray; switched off, the indicator is amber with a strikethrough. With the 12.3-inch display, the indicator is green when the lane markings are detected and gray with a strikethrough when the system is off.

Ford lights vary by model and year. The owner’s manual for the vehicle says what each light means on it, and a Ford dealer or a qualified mechanic can say what it means for a particular car.

With blind spot assist

On cars with blind spot assist, the manual says the lane keeping aid warning lamp, or a yellow lane marking in the instrument cluster, shows that blind spot assist has activated.

What NHTSA calls it

NHTSA calls steering that keeps a car from leaving its lane lane keeping assistance, and a system that only warns, as the car approaches or crosses lane markers, lane departure warning. NHTSA notes that makers use different names for the same driver assistance technologies.

Other makers’ lane keeping lights

Toyota calls its light the LTA indicator, Honda the LKAS indicator and Hyundai the Lane Safety indicator light.
