Toyota LTA indicator
Toyota’s indicator for Lane Tracing Assist (LTA): white when the system is operating, green while it is steering, and flashing orange for a lane departure alert. A steady orange light is a malfunction.
How to read it
Toyota’s 2024 RAV4 manual says the LTA indicator comes on, with a message on the multi-information display, when the LTA switch turns the system on. Its colour gives the system’s state: illuminated in white, LTA is operating; in green, the steering assist or lane centering function is turning the wheel; flashing in orange, the lane departure alert is operating. The same manual lists an orange LTA indicator among its warning lights, for a malfunction in LTA.

Toyota lights vary by model and year. The owner’s manual for the vehicle says what each light means on it, and a Toyota dealer or a qualified mechanic can say what it means for a particular car.
What LTA does
The RAV4 manual describes two kinds of steering help. The steering assist function turns the wheel in small amounts for a short time when the car might leave its lane. The lane centering function keeps steering to hold the car in its lane, and works only while dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range is operating.
What NHTSA calls it
NHTSA calls the first kind lane keeping assistance, which steers to prevent the vehicle from departing the lane, and the second lane centering assistance, which provides continual steering to keep the vehicle centered. NHTSA notes that makers use different names for the same driver assistance technologies.
What the manual says to do
For the orange malfunction light, Toyota’s RAV4 manual says: “Follow the instructions displayed on the multi-information display.”
Other makers’ lane keeping lights
Honda calls its light the LKAS indicator, Ford the lane keeping system indicator and Hyundai the Lane Safety indicator light.
