How to read it

Hyundai’s 2024 Tucson manual says the Forward Safety warning light comes on for about 3 seconds when the ignition is switched on and then goes off, and comes on whenever a malfunction with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist is detected. FCA detects a vehicle, a pedestrian or a cyclist ahead, may warn the driver of a possible collision with a message and a warning sound, and may help brake the car to reduce collision speed or avoid a collision.

Hyundai lights vary by model and year. The owner’s manual for the vehicle says what each light means on it, and a Hyundai dealer or a qualified mechanic can say what it means for a particular car.

What NHTSA calls it

NHTSA calls a system that warns forward collision warning, and one that also brakes automatic emergency braking. NHTSA notes that makers use different names for the same driver assistance technologies.

What the US standard says

NHTSA’s automatic emergency braking standard, FMVSS 127, requires a telltale for the driver when such a system detects a malfunction, or adjusts its performance so that it will no longer meet the standard’s braking requirements.

Other makers’ lights

Toyota calls its light the PCS warning light and Ford the pre-collision assist warning lamp. Hyundai’s master warning light also comes on for an FCA malfunction.
